  • Description:

For those intrigued by marine and rainforest ecology, Honduras's blend of spectacular diving, dense tropical jungles and lush mountainous islands is unrivaled. On this hands-on field studies program learn about marine mammals and the underwater realm of the Bay Islands by diving alongside professional marine biologists. But before you put on your fins, lace up your hiking boots and discover the secrets of tropical rainforests by exploring with naturalists. Everywhere we travel, we experience the rich and diverse Honduran culture.

Our rainforest adventure begins at an archeological treasure buried deep within the jungle - the ruins of the Mayan city Copan. The well-preserved artifacts and architecture of this former civilization capture your imagination. Spend a few days on an eco-friendly working plantation where you learn about agroforestry and immerse yourself in the Honduran culture. Explore the Pico Bonito Park and Cuero y Salado Wildlife Refuge via speedboat and canoe with local naturalists. Largely untracked, the rugged isolation of these areas provides refuge for plant and animal life endangered elsewhere in Honduras. Spot howler monkeys and crocodiles as you learn firsthand about tropical rainforest ecosystems and conservation efforts. Hike up to majestic waterfalls surrounded by thriving flora and fauna. Ready for thrilling whitewater? Take on the untamed rapids of the Rio Congrejal! Keep your eyes peeled for white-faced monkeys and colorful parrots lurking in trees along the water's edge.

A quick flight takes us to the Roatan Institute of Marine Sciences (RIMS) in Anthony's Key, founded to educate divers about reef conservation and marine ecology. The facility boasts well-equipped classrooms and labs, as well as the Roatan Regional Museum with exhibits on local ecology and culture. RIMS is renowned for its research on the bottlenose dolphin, affording us rare opportunities to study dolphin anatomy, training procedures and behavior while closely observing these amazing creatures in their natural habitat. Experience the unforgettable thrill of diving and swimming alongside these playful mammals.

Roatan's thriving reef, vertical drop-offs and impressive wrecks provide a fantastic underwater playground. Evaluate reef conservation efforts and investigate coral, invertebrates and fish community structure. Check out schools of dog snapper, eagle rays, octopuses, sea turtles and shy morays. Of course there's more to Roatan than just diving! Sea kayak, play volleyball, have a beach barbecue on white sands bordered by blue waters and verdant palms. From this beautiful island and the mystical sea to ancient ruins and dense jungle, expert ecologists and guides open our eyes to the environmental and cultural wonders of this country.
