  • Description:

Ko-Ach Adventures is a non-profit outdoor program providing wilderness therapeutic adventures for persons with autistic spectrum disorder, a mild to moderate developmental delay or disability.

Fundamentally, Ko-Ach Adventures aims to promote healthy living and well-being while instilling a sense of accomplishment, pride and community among participants. We at Ko-Ach recognize that our participants have the capacity to learn from new experiences and, if given the chance, will uncover hidden strengths and abilities that neither they nor their families new existed. Ko-Ach Adventures strives to be inclusive, nonjudgmental, and client focused which, as has been our experience, allows our participants to thrive. We provide a unique opportunity to develop strength of character, build friendships, and challenge participants in the unique environment of outdoor recreation and adventure.

Group members, from the get go, are immersed in team building activities as well as formal and informal lessons in areas of canoeing, swimming, orienteering, and canoe trip preparation. Our varied outdoor activities - such as hiking, swimming and an eco-challenge - mix skill development with both positive social interaction and fun. While safety is our primary concern, we have found that scaling back some of our special needs client’s typical routines uncovered hidden creativity, talents and abilities among our groups.

Building on an established, well-knit group resolve, participants participate in a multi-day canoe trip. Under the guidance of our trained staff, participants will have the opportunity to contribute to the entire trip experience. The program is designed to encourage creativity, respect, the building of positive behaviours and relationships and above all, have fun!!!
